It's official! On Friday, July 23, 2021, Montgomery County held a ceremony in which they removed street signs in Montgomery Square bearing the names of two confederated generals and replaced them with new signs honoring Geneva Mason and William Dove, prominent community leaders from the historic African-American Scotland Community. Many thanks to the members of the Montgomery Square Citizens Association who advocated for this change, our District 1 Councilmember, Andrew Friedson, who spearheaded the effort, and the Montgomery County Planning Board for ultimately making it happen. Below are photos I took of the ceremony, which include descendants of Ms. Mason and Mr. Dove.
